PROTECTION THAT'S NEEDED

Equine Gastric Ulcer Syndrome (EGUS) is a debilitating, common condition that affects up to 93% of racehorses and almost 60% of other performance horses. In foals, the overall prevalence of gastric lesions is up to 57%.

Clinical signs of EGUS include depressed appetite, unthriftyness, abdominal discomfort, behavioural changes, and poor performance. Current treatments can be costly and less than effective. Some horses may be asymptomatic in the early stages of EGUS until the disease process becomes progressively more severe, at which time clinical signs become apparent.

Excessive exposure to stomach acid, feeding practices, intensive training, and the administration of certain anti-inflammatory drugs play an important role in the development of stomach ulcers in horses.
